The Everest Mountain Flight is a one-hour sightseeing flight that departs from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, usually at dawn. These flights are operated by several domestic airlines (like Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines) in specialized aircraft with large windows and guaranteed window seats for every passenger. The pilots are highly experienced in mountain navigation and ensure that each passenger gets a personal view of Everest, often inviting them to the cockpit for a photo opportunity.
The flight path heads east from Kathmandu, following the Himalayan range, and culminates at the Everest region before returning. The highlight is a slow, banking turn in front of Mount Everest itself, allowing both sides of the aircraft a magnificent, unobstructed view.
Overview
The flight usually lasts between 50 minutes up to an hour. The planes take off either from TIA, Kathmandu. During the flight, you will catch a glimpse of 20 of the highest peaks to the East of Nepal starting from the Langtang Lirung peak which is the closest peak to Kathmandu, then move towards Mt. Everest in the East and finally fly to Chamlang peak. From there, the plane takes a turn and the passengers get a second look at the view while they make their way back to Kathmandu.
The mountain flight not only allows you to enjoy fantastic views but also helps you to understand the geography of Nepal. Although mountain flights do not have a long history, it has gained popularity among tourists for the beauty that it promises. Buddha Air provides mountain flights every day, early in the mornings, when the Himalayas views are the best!

Trip Highlights
- Guaranteed Window Seat & Personalized View: Every passenger has a window seat (assigned by the airline, often via a lucky draw for the right side on the way out). The crew expertly rotates passengers to ensure everyone gets the best possible view and photo opportunity.
- The Everest Moment: The palpable excitement as the aircraft approaches Everest, with the pilot's announcement and the collective awe of passengers. The close-up sight of the iconic pyramid, often with its wind-sculpted plume, is unforgettable.
- Dawn Flight: Flying at sunrise means incredibly clear skies, stunning golden light (alpenglow) painting the peaks, and minimal turbulence.
- A Glacier Superhighway: The bird's-eye view of the massive, serpent-like glaciers like the Khumbu Glacier (the highest in the world) is a perspective impossible to get from the ground.
- Efficiency & Accessibility: Perfect for those with limited time, mobility constraints, or who prefer not to trek for weeks. You experience the world's highest peaks in just a morning.
- Commemorative Certificate: Most airlines provide a personalized flight certificate as a memento of your journey to the top of the world.
